Hair loss could be iron deficiency!!!

I read a very interesting article today about hair loss!  It said that (as long known) it could be not enough protein in your diet, but it also said that all around hair loss/thinning is the first sign of an iron deficiency even before fatigue!

I have been struggling with hair loss almost since the start, but have noticed that it gets much worse at times and now I think I know why!  I do have a tendency to run low on iron so maybe this is a signal my body is giving me.  There are also other possible answers here like stress or trauma related Alopecia, but the iron deficiency made total sense to me! I guess its time to visit my doc!

I hope this helps someone else.

Thanks for the link. I will be very interested in my levels when I go over my labs with the office in Sept. My hair is falling out fast and furious! Thanks again, Terri

Terri,
You are in that stage where you will be losing hair.  It should stop in a month or so.  The growing out stage ended up taking me almost 18 months to get back to normal.  It sucks!

Thanks for the information. I just noticed a few days ago that I am having a lot of hair falling out again. I was thinking thyroid reassessment, but will ask about the other causes as well. I am almost at my 3 year anniversary and it's time for labs, so I'll see. It is alarming in that my hair was just getting back to normal!

Prior to surgery I became anemic due to changes in my monthly. I lost hair. I raise my iron back up before surgery, but my ferriten was low at 3 month labs and I have started losing hair again. Thankfully I have lots to lose. I've always said, if I have to wear a wig or hats because my hair all falls out I will live with it if I am healthy because of my DS. LOVE my DS.

I never had hair issues, but it sounds like it is both blessing, in that it is some type of warning that all is not well, and curse, in the time it takes for your hair to grow back.  I did have hair loss issues with other ailments, but very surprised that I didn't when I had my DS.
